About Black Walnuts

What is the difference between Black Walnuts & English Walnuts?

There are a few key differences between the two walnut species.

1. Black Walnuts are native to North America, specifically the eastern United States. They grow wild and are hand harvested by thousands of local foragers across the Midwest. No fertilizers, pesticides or irrigation systems are used making Black Walnuts one of the most sustainably sourced tree nuts in the world. English walnuts originated in Persia and are now cultivated in many parts of the world where they are primarily grown in large commercial orchards.

2. Black Walnuts have a very hard, thick shell that is difficult to crack. Harvesting and processing are more labor intensive, a major reason why Black Walnuts are commercially available in large and medium size pieces. English walnuts have a thinner, easier to crack shell.

3. Black Walnuts have a bold, distinct flavor profile, making them a cherished ingredient for both chefs and home cooks who seek to add a unique, memorable taste to their culinary creations. English walnuts have a light, bitter taste.

4. Black Walnuts have 57% more protein (highest protein nut) and provide higher amounts of potassium, magnesium and other key vitamins and minerals.

Are Black Walnuts processed with any other nuts or products?

No, our Black Walnuts are processed in a facility by themselves.

What is the best way to store Black Walnuts?

Generally speaking, we recommend consumers store Black Walnuts in the refrigerator up to a year, or the freezer for a year or longer. This will ensure your Black Walnuts maintain freshness and best flavor.
